Dubai accelerates sustainability drive with BEMAS accreditation of five leading companies
17 February 2025

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the DSCE, said: “The accreditation of five industry leaders under BEMAS is a testament to Dubai’s unwavering commitment to advancing energy efficiency and sustainability. This initiative is an important pillar in our strategy to transform Dubai into a global benchmark for smart and sustainable cities, aligning with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for a sustainable future. By empowering the private sector to adopt cutting-edge energy management practices, we are accelerating progress towards the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to ensure a resilient future. The success of this programme underscores Dubai’s ability to turn ambitious sustainability targets into actionable road maps, cementing our leadership in the global energy transition.”

HE Ahmed Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the DSCE, said: “BEMAS exemplifies the power of cross-sector collaboration in driving tangible climate action. By uniting regulators, real estate stakeholders and energy experts, we are institutionalising best practices that reduce carbon footprints while enhancing economic competitiveness."

The event marked a milestone achievement with the accreditation of five leading companies under the BEMAS framework. The five companies awarded certificates of accreditation were Al-Futtaim Engineering, Engie Cofley Energy Services, EP&T Global, Enova Facilities Management Services and FARNEK Services. The BEMAS accreditation certificates were presented by Mustafa Al Yousuf, Chairman of the BEMAS Accreditation Board. Collectively managing over 700 buildings and more than 13 million square metres across the UAE, these companies were recognised for their exceptional dedication to enhancing energy management standards, achieving significant energy savings and contributing to the Emirate’s long-term sustainability goals.

The workshop featured keynote addresses from government sector representatives, including Ramiz Hamdan Alaileh, Executive Director of the RSB, and Mohammed Al Bidwawi, CEO of the Corporate Support Sector and Acting CEO of the Real Estate Regulatory Agency at the Dubai Land Department. The workshop highlighted the critical role of accreditation in advancing Dubai’s sustainability targets, particularly in line with Dubai’s Demand Side Management (DSM) Strategy 2050, which aims to reduce electricity and water consumption by 30% by 2030 and 50% by 2050.

Al Bidwawi said: "This milestone reflects the power of collaboration and our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability in Dubai’s real estate sector. The progress of the BEMAS initiative, from accrediting its first company in 2022 to celebrating five today, underscores Dubai’s leadership in sustainability and its alignment with the UAE’s ambitious energy and environmental goals. As we look ahead, we remain dedicated to supporting BEMAS-accredited companies and building a future defined by sustainable growth, excellence and a lasting positive impact for generations to come."

Representatives of the accredited companies, as industry experts, discussed the current best practices and the future of energy management, exploring innovations such as using artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT) and renewable energy integration in facility management. The event highlighted partnerships between regulatory bodies and private entities, emphasising the importance of a shared vision and collaborative action in achieving sustainability milestones.

The workshop also addressed pressing challenges in energy management, such as reducing costs for tenants and investors, optimising building operations and compliance with government sustainability targets. Discussions underscored the necessity of energy audits, the integration of energy management practices in facility management, data-driven decision-making and the use of AI for predictive maintenance and performance optimisation.

The event concluded with a call to action, urging stakeholders across the real estate and facility management sectors to pursue BEMAS accreditation, elevate their energy management standards and actively contribute to energy savings.

The BEMAS initiative was launched by the Regulatory and Supervisory Bureau in 2021, under the direction of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, to enhance energy management standards in Dubai’s buildings, in line with Dubai's DSM Strategy and the UAE's broader climate neutrality goals.
